Mayakkam Enna Stills

Mayakkam Enna to be remade in Telugu

Tamil director Selva Raghavan is a well known name in Tollywood. He had won several fans with his creative ideas and youth-friendly ways of storytelling. His latest film in Tamil, Mayakkam Enna was released on Friday and has been receiving superb reviews from all the corners.

It seems Selva Raghavan has delivered goods yet again with a unique storyline and different characterization given to the protagonist. Dhanush is the hero and Richa Gangopadhyaya played his romantic interest.

To the disappointment of Selva fans, Mayakkam Enna wasn’t dubbed in Telugu. Selva even doesn’t have plans to dub it. He is thinking of doing a remake. He is yet to announce the star cast if he is willing to do a remake.

Review: Mayakkam Enna is worth a watch

Pavithra Srinivasan feels Mayakkam Enna has a brilliant first half but the film looses the steam in the second half

Some of the best parts of director Selvaraghavan's Mayakkam Enna, are vivid snapshots that are very effective in showing glimpses of the hero's tortured soul.

When his best friend hugs both the heroine and the hero, and mumbles in a drunken stupor, "My best friend, and my girlfriend!" hero and heroine look at each other, awkward and uneasy, both aware of their attraction for each other, but both tied down, in his case by affection for his friend, and in her case because she is supposed to be in a relationship with someone else.

Other effective moments are when the hero, intent on a wildlife photography assignment, tries to capture a bird in mid-flight, and then has an epiphany as he gazes at a fluttering leaf, dumb-struck.

And then there's the brilliantly picturised song, Oda Oda Dhooram Koraiyala, which captures the protagonist's frustration with life and his girl in a way that's both hilarious and touching.

This much anticipated Gemini Circuit and Aum Production film is about a wannabe wildlife photographer, Karthik Swaminathan (Dhanush), who dreams of his photographs decorating the covers of The National Geographic. In reality, though, he is reduced to clicking stills of awkward marriage receptions and B-grade film stars.

He has no family except his sister, but does have a group of extraordinarily supportive friends (a bit unreal, that) who practically clothe, feed and give him a home.

Karthik has dreams of being an assistant to the great photographer Mathesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad), who rebuffs him in such rude fashion that Karthik crumbles. Life doesn't seem worth living as he drowns himself in stale biryani and beer.

This is when fate intervenes and turns his life upside down. Enter Yamini (Richa Gangopadhyay), his best friend Sundar's (Sundar Ramu) girlfriend. They dislike each other on sight--predictably because they are attracted to each other--and the situations that throw them together are both amusing and heart-warming.

There is plenty of girl-bashing and manly bonding but underneath it all, you know that Yamini is the only one in Karthik's heart, which makes it an intriguing cat-and-mouse game as they trade looks, barbs and quarrels.

But fate plays its hand again in the form of Mathesh Krishnaswamy and events don't quite turn out the way anyone expects.

Thus so far, it's a brilliant film. The characters, setting, and G V Prakash's songs, including Kadhal En Kadhal, are a riot of complicated emotions and intriguing twists. Dhanush and Selvaraghavan have contributed to the music as well.

So far, you are extremely invested in the story, and the screenplay moves at breakneck speed with many of Selvaraghavan's trademark touches. Even the so-called girl-bashing, though squirm-worthy when it happens, does have its reasons.

Particularly effective is Ramji's superb camera-work, considering the hero is a photographer, and creative enough to capture the spirit of his subjects. Kola Bhaskar's editing is top-notch. There's less of hormone-driven sexuality, and more of personality-driven attraction, which is excellent.

Yes, the protagonists are going through great emotional turmoil on screen, but all you can do is wonder when it will end. Dramatic moments lose their impact, and the climax, when it arrives, doesn't have the punch you expect.

Dhanush just keeps getting better and better. The man practically carries the film on his slender shoulders; his eyes and body language convey such expression and emotion that you're carried away. His frustration at not being able to get his breaks, confusion at being attracted to his friend's girl, self-loathing at his supposed betrayal, show skills in acting that truly elevate it to another level.

Richa looks modern and polished in the first half, an apt foil to the protagonist, with her looks and expressive face. It's an impressive debut and her dubbing artist, Deepa Venkat, deserves kudos. The second half requires her to look mostly unhappy, which sort of lessens the impact.

For the rest, Sundar Ramu, among the friends, does a neat job; others just pass muster, and various secondary characters play their parts.

If there are faults to be found, they lie with the director himself. Selvaraghavan has packed so much into the first half, which practically bursts with spirit, emotion and liveliness, that the fall is inevitable. You expect the second to surpass the first but it doesn't. The overt melodrama bogs you down.

Still, Mayakkam Enna is worth a watch if only for the fact that the director takes a well-used theme and adds his own distinct touches to it; the subtle by-play of emotions and nuances lend it quality. Had he tightened the second half, we would have had a masterpiece on our hands.

Half and hour into the second half, and the illusion begins to dissipate. The characters lose their spontaneity and the screenplay begins to drag so much that it's difficult to suppress a yawn.

Mayakkam Enna a Classic cut

Selvaraghavan's Mayakkam Enna which was released yesterday has got a great opening. The film is getting rage reviews from all sides. Dhanush as Karthik Swaminathan the aspiring Photographer has lived his role and his acting was so matured. Richa Gangopadhyay as Yamini strikes with her acting skills in her first venture itself.

GV Prakash Kumar's Bgm is the main soul of the film, so as Ramji's outstanding Cinematography. Above all there is the creator Selvaraghavan the director of Mayakkam Enna, He just pulls the pain out of the audience who watch the film and leave them with tears.

Mayakkam Enna is not a time pass movie, there are many social elements and messages added in the film. The film moves at a slow pace, but it's worth spending ur time. Mayakkam Enna a film for everyone who aspires in their life to become an inspiration for others.

Mayakkam Enna Movie latest News

Selvaraghavan and Dhanush have got together for the fourth time for yet another unique venture, Mayakkam Enna that hit the screens worldwide yesterday.

Mayakkam Enna: A celebration of quality cinema
Sometimes when you watch a movie you might think if any other actor could have done it better than the hero in the film. Mayakkam Enna is one such film where you can think of any class actors like Vikram or Kamal Hassan might love to do. But fortunately, Kollywood has several actors who can do such roles very convincingly irrespective of their looks or experience or fan base. If you thought Aadukalam deserved a National Award for Dhanush then you will be convinced watching this. If you thought he did not deserve then you have to watch this film. He comes out with a powerhouse performance as Karthik, a freelance photographer dying to get a break and stays with you even after you leave the theatre.

It's a hattrick for the brothers (after the success of Thuluvadho Ilamai and Kadhal Kondaen) and they deserve a pat on their back for making such a class film.

The movie starts off with an intro about Karthik's life and his passion (photography), his family and his group of friends, who are very close to each other. He wants to become a wildlife photographer and keeps trying hard to join as an assistant to a famous photographer. In the mean time he also takes some freelance assignments. Karthik has a younger sister and they have lost their parents at a very young age. It's his friends who take care of them after that incident. They are all closely bound and most of the time stay at Sundar's (Sunder Ramu) place.

Sundar introduces his girlfriend Yamini (Richa) to his friends saying that she had agreed to date him for some weeks. The friends don't approve their relationship as he did not tell them earlier but later agree to it except for Karthik, who hates her. Karthik and Sundar have a special bonding and they are close to each other than the other friends.

Meanwhile, the hatred between Karthik and Yamini slowly develops in to love and they get married. Turn of events lead to Karthick becoming abnormal, how Yamini manages to continue her life with him and how she manages to get him out of this situation forms the rest of the story. You cannot stop from comparing this film to the earlier films of Selvaraghavan. Some might tell that this movie resembles his earlier movies in parts but I  would like to say that those situations are his stamp as a director and he does full justice to the story and the way it's treated. There are several scenes which are fresh and will be remembered for ever like  the one where Sundar's dad offers drinks to them to sort out the girlfriend issue,  the one where Karthik acts like a dog to get a job as an assistant, the scene where one of their neighbor asks Yamini to vacate the place because of the problems created by Karthik and the scene where Yamini has a miscarriage because of Karthik

The best one for sure will be the scene during the interval, when he goes to pick Yamini from a bus stand when both are at the peak of their hatred to each other. The anger slowly changes into weeping, expression of their worries, a gentle hug, a lively chat and a kiss. This is for sure one of the best engaging intervals I had ever seen for a long time (atleast after Sivaji).

The background score (GV Prakash) and cinematography (Ramji) are the real backbone for the film and it makes you part of the entire proceedings. GV Prakash is excellent in the rerecording and he smartly keeps it void in many scenes to make it more effective. The songs are placed at right intervals and are shot beautifully. I am sure Kaathal En Kaathal will be a scream in the theatre.

Dhanush has an extremely difficult role to play and does it with ease. Richa though looks little mature for Dhanush, but aptly fits into the role of a stubborn modern woman who manages all issues arising because of her abnormal husband and also guides him to the path of success. She could not have asked for a better role in her debut film. The supporting actors also give a good performance.

Being a budding photographer myself, I really enjoyed this film on a different note too. ...like watching the shots where he photographs wildlife, his passion for photography etc. They say when you see a picture through the lens, time stops and its equivalent to enlightenment. To bring that effect on screen is very difficult but it was shown superbly and each upcoming photographer will cherish this film.

Though the film has several mass elements it could very easily be classified as a film for the class. It's a proof that Kollywood has matured audience and can offer films in all genres. This should definitely fall in your list of must-watch films.

Mayakkam Enna Movie Review

Tamil (U/A) Cast: Dhanush, Richa Gangopadhyay, Sunder Ramu, Mathivanan Rajendran, Pooja Balu, Soni Barring, Rajiv Choudhry Director: Selvaraghavan

Follow your heart. So goes the tagline. And for once it pays to do so. For, brothers — Selvaraghavan and Dhanush, who are back on the marquee after a long haitus with “Mayakkam Enna” (Why this swoon), ensure they come up not only with an enterprising but also entertaining fare, well worth the watch.

Though, at peripheral plane, “Mayakkam” is your proverbial triangular love do, at its pivotal pith, however, Selva concerns himself with the contours of husband-wife connect. He does this with admirable aplomb and delectable deftness of craft and cinematic acumen.

“Mayakkam” endears and engages not only discerning, hard to please diaspora, but also those that care whit, whiff or woof, on how a movie entertains and engulfs you without much ado.

Laboriously and languidly, Selva unspools the strange symbiosis that builds between a simple, ambitious photographer Karthik, aspiring to capture wildlife and vivacious Yaamini, dated by his bum-chum Sundar, who introduces her to him. As the adage goes: while opposites go hammer and tongs at each other they also get attracted like magnets.

The triangular, tantalising tale then on snakes through several twists as the threesome try to sort out the knotty tangle they are enmeshed in and going through the angst and anguish of such an alchemy.

Told with verve and vitality, Selva ensures “Mayakkam” has audiences swooning over his sizzling flick. What adds to the lustrous luminosity is Dhanush’s electic portrayal with Richa snuggling into the role with matching elan.

Sunder completes and complements the sum game. Cinematographer Ramji and music director G V Prakash ensure “Mayakkam” is magical and mesmerising. In sum, just don’t ask why but swoon and sway to the swell of an ensemble show.

Dhanush is the pivot around whom the whole story revolves. Karthik (Dhanush) is a freelance photographer who lives life his own way. He does work hard and wants to leave a mark as an photographer. Though he does portfolio and weddings, his pasion is wildlife photography. His only desire in life is to work with Madhesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad), a world renowned wildlife photographer.

There begins a different journey in the lives of these three people.  What happens then forms the rest.

Performance

Its straightaway a Dhanush special. The National award winning actor has proved that he can do any role with ease. His expressions and body language  are the hallmark of the movie. Selvaraghavan has understood the strength of Dhanush and played it well.

Rucha is a Revelation. She brings right emotions and has a meaty role to play. Sundar walks away with honours and does chip in with his best. All the erst of the characters add pep to the proceedings.

Technicalities

Selvah has a nose for picking right technicians. Cinematographer Ramji is the apt choice. He pictures a poetry on screen. His camera captures the events in rich colours with clarity. G V Prakash's music adds strength. The background score give filip to the scenes. Selvah's dialogues too deserve a mention.

Analysis

It is more a take off of Kadhal Kondein, but narrated in a different way. Selvaraghavan knows the pulse of youngsters and gives one to suit their tastes. With a seasoned campaigner like Dhanush by his side, he has gone gaga. All said Mayakkam ENna is a perfect one for youths

MAYAKKAM ENNA MOVIE PREVIEW

Starring: Dhanush, Richa Gangopadhyay Direction: SelvaraghavanMusic: G.V. Prakash KumarProduction: Gemini Film Circuit
Selvaraghavan is back silently with Mayakkam Enna, a romantic movie (at least by the looks of it) starring Dhanush and Richa. After Aayirathil Oruvan, Selvaraghavan's two projects ran into trouble. While he opted out of the Kamal starrer Viswaroopam, his Irandam Ulagam was stalled after Andrea pulled out of the film. But soon enough, Selva started off with Mayakkam Enna and finished it without much fuss.

Selva and the team were largely silent about the movie's production and until the promos started coming out, nobody had a clue about what was going on. The film was also in production for a very short period of time - only three months. Shot extensively in Kannur, Kerala the movie is supposed to have Dhanush in four different get ups. Richa Gangopadhyay has garnered quite good press for this movie and even secured a couple of movie deals.

Selva refuted rumors that he is remaking Irandam Ulagam with a different star cast saying that the two movies have nothing in common and Mayakkam Enna has a different script altogether. There was also some confusion about the music director of the film. Earlier G V Prakash was announced as the composer and a bit later he pulled out stating other commitments. Then came Yuvan Shankar Raja who eventually walked out of the project citing other commitments.

In the end, G V Prakash was roped in again whose songs have already become quite popular among fans. Produced and distributed by Gemini Film Circuit, Mayakkam Enna is releasing all over this Friday, November 25, 2011.

Generally, expectations skyrocket when people hear that Selvaraghavan is going to direct a new movie. And we never know what to expect; the director keeps on moving to various kinds of films. We can only say that Selvaraghavan’s career has been memorable so far, right from ‘Thulluavadho Ilamai’ to his most recent epic movie ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’. Recently, Selvaraghavan made plans to come up with a new movie ‘Erandam Ulagam’ with Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah in the leading roles. But, things went awry, when the actress suddenly walked out of the project citing reasons that we don’t know. So, Selvaraghavan started a fresh movie starring Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay. In August 2011, ‘Mayakkam Enna’ became the title for the movie – which literally means “What’s this Wooziness”. And reports came in that Dhanush would parade four different looks in the film.

Ever since, Selvaraghavan has clarified that the movie has a completely different script from the earlier one which got shelved. Reportedly, Dhanush is going to play various stages in the life of the protagonist, ranging from a teenager to an old man.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack by G. V. Prakash Kumar was released on 19 September 2011 and has received mostly positive reviews. Moreover, a couple of songs written by Dhanush himself have become the highlights of this album. ‘Voda Voda’ has come out as the favorite track for youngsters while ‘Kadhal En Kadhal’ is doing great with almost everyone. ‘Ennana Seidhom’ will be a transcendent delight for the elder section of music fans. Other tracks in the album are Naan Sonnadhum Mazhaivandhucha, Pirai Thedum, and Mayakkam Enna Theme.

“This isn’t a love story, but there is a lot of romance into it” says Selvaraghavan. The director guarantees that this one is not just a new type of movie, but a completely new movie going experience for film buffs. The movie will be loved especially by the younger audience, as it is reportedly going to showcase various problems faced by the younger generation. The teaser for the movie came out recently, seeing which we can certainly say that there is a lot of difference in Danush’s acting style. He essays the role of a photographer and brings out the experiences of the character in various stages of life.

Although the movie was expected to release on 25 November 2011, we now hear that it will actually be released on 18 November 2011. Anyway, keep looking here for more Mayakkam Enna updates
